MANITOBA HOME EDUCATION

The following information has been provided by: Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth (March 2007)

In Manitoba, parents are required to register for homeschooling and submit two Progress Reports per year: one at the end of January and one at the end of June. These report forms are included in the Notification Packages that are sent to all home schooling parents. There is no financial support from the provincial government available for homeschooling. A staff member performs a monitoring and support role for parents of homeschooled students. Homeschooling parents may access the department library for materials.

The following information is taken from the department’s web site and details the choices available with regard to curriculum. Homeschoolers are not required to follow the provincial curriculum, but many do so by choosing the Independent Study option or by combining attendance at a funded independent school or public school with homeschooling. Homeschooling requires that students receive an equivalent education to what they would get in the public school system.

Curriculum Options for Homeschoolers
In terms of teaching curricula, parents may choose to follow one of three different routes:

1. Independent Study Option - The Independent Study Program (formerly known as the Correspondence Branch) offers course materials and marking services for grades 1-12. Print based courses can be taken in two ways; by course materials set out in lesson-by-lesson format with marking services, or resource packages without marking services. At the Grade 1-6 level, courses are offered in the core areas (Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies & Science). At the grade 7-12 level, additional options are available along with the core areas. For further information, call Toll-free 1 800 465-9915.

2. Christian-Based Curricula - There are a number of Christian-based curricula being used by homeschooling parents. Most programs are laid out in a lesson-by-lesson format. Some programs offer external marking services, while others do not. If you would like to discuss this option further, you may wish to contact the Home Schooling office, the Manitoba Association of Christian Home Schoolers, or Hearth Families Incorporated.

3. Child Centered Instruction - Parents may also use a child-centered approach. In these cases, parents may elect to use print and non-print materials from a variety of sources. They may also supplement their teaching with a variety of personal experiences, and activities that occur at appropriate times during the child's education. Some parents who choose this method elect to use the curriculum guides available from the Manitoba Textbook Bureau. (Toll-free 1 800 305-5515). Parents wishing to follow this option may wish to contact the Home Schooling office, or the Manitoba Association for Schooling at Home.

The Manitoba government does not provide funding for homeschooling.

NOVA SCOTIA HOME EDUCATION

The following information was obtained from: Nova Scotia Home Education Association (Sept 2007)

As homeschoolers in Nova Scotia, we are quite fortunate; we are not required to take standardized tests each year or to send in elaborate portfolios. However, we are required to register with the Department of Education, and to send in a brief report of the child's progress in June. You can find more information and the necessary registration forms on the Department of Education website.
